By using nature's content as a starting point, I strive to transcend the physical elements, to endow them with a uniquely personal and spiritual quality. My landscapes, then, become interior landscapes that not only speak of those locations where I paint, but seek to capture a sense of intensity of mood in the natural world at large. Explore My Abstract Work

I begin with the premise that paintings are surfaces first that emanate their own brilliance. I let the medium guide the content by allowing forms to emerge of themselves. My personal diary is expressed in painting as each day creates a new set of feelings reflected through a myriad of media, spontaneously sought and reacted upon in a variety of subjects. My images come from a visual affirmation and acknowledgement of my dreams. The act of painting continually excites me as I use surrealist concepts to discover a language of calligraphic symbol and amorphous and concrete shapes to create my own universe as a response to the one I live in.

Explore My NEW Work

Mark Dorman’s new work is called Pathways to a Mughal Paradise: Variations. Mark’s works, in oil on wood panels and oil on canvas, use the original vibrant jewel colors of Persian and Indian miniature painting, particularly using colors from the time of the Mughal dynasty of emperors that ruled for 300 years (c.1500-1800) in India. The surface of the wood panels is prepared like Renaissance and Russian Icons, emanating from ancient traditions. Mark Dorman’s work reflects a contemporary view of the structural elements of the palaces in the backgrounds of Persian miniatures. These pieces put a new and jazzy twist on Persian miniatures, with punctuating movement, as well as being modeled like mandelas, reflected in square and rectangular shapes, as opposed to concentric circles. The use of architectural blocks in motion harkens back to the Bauhaus movement of 1919 to 1933 and is reminiscent of Mondrian and Mies Van der Rohe. Mark calls his work Post-Modern Bauhaus.
